An easy to follow tutorial that that reveals true magic that lies within Adobe's Photoshop. You'll be amazed how easy it is to follow along and create very realistic fire.

Create The Document
- Create a new file
- 640 x 360 at 150 dpi
Video Tutorial
Setting the Stage
- Select the default foreground and background colors by pressing the "D" key.
- Fill the background with black by pressing Alt+Backspace
Place The Text
- Select the text tool
- set the font to Monotype Corsiva
- set the size to 110pt
- set the font color to white
- Type OT on the image
- Place the text slightly below center to allow for flame wisps
Setup For The Flame
- Duplicate the "OT" Text layer by pressing Crtl+J
- Turn off the layer named "OT copy" by clicking its eyeball on the layers window
- Add a layer style to the OT copy layer by double clicking it in the layer window
- Under Blending options set the Fill Opacity to 0 located under the Advanced Blending section
- Select the "Outer Glow" style
- Set the Size to 4px
- Click the color box and set the RGB value to #ffb017
- Select the "Inner Glow" style
- Set the opacity to 100%
- Click the color box and set the RGB value to #ff9c00
- Set the size to 11px
- Click OK
- Make the OT layer visible by clicking on it's emtpty eyeball box
- Add a layer style to the OT layer by double clicking it in the layer window
- Under Blending options set the Fill Opacity to 0 located under the Advanced Blending section
- Select the "Outer Glow" style
- Set the Size to 28px
- Click the color box and set the RGB value to #ff4e00
- Select the "Inner Glow" style
- Set the opacity to 100%
- Click the color box and set the RGB value to #ffc600
- Set the size to 18px
- Click OK
Flame On
- Select the smudge tool
- set the smudge tool settings
- Hardness to 25%
- Strength to 75%
- Diameter to 20px
- With the OT copy layer selected, use the smudge tool to pull out wisps of flames (see video time = )
Enhance The Flames
- Turn the OT layer into a selection by holding down the Ctrl key and clicking it's layer icon in the layers window
- Inverse the selection by menu/Select/Inverse ot Shift+Ctrl+I
- Press the Delete key
- Deselect by pressing Ctrl+d
- Turn the OT layer into a selection again by holding down the Ctrl key and clicking it's layer icon in the layers window
- Create a new layer by clicking the new layer icon on the Layers window or Pressing Shift+Ctrl+N
- Bring up the Fill dialog box by pressing Shift+Backspace
- Under Contents set the Use selection to White, Click OK
- Deselect by pressing Ctrl+d
- Set the blending mode of the newest layer to Overlay
There you have it, a very realistic looking fire text effect using Photoshop
